Baseball in the Bible Belt
| Sometimes I just
can't believe it. The Texas Rangers are slightly above 500 and share the division
lead. A continuous sore spot is the managerial ability of Buck Showalter (who never played baseball). Texas has a 5-3 lead over Oakland last Wednesday night going into the 9th inning. The Buckaroo brought in a relief pitcher in the 7th who gave up nothing. Brought in another one in the 8th who gave up nothing. But, for the 9th, he brought in Francisco (Coco) Cordero who blew 3 of the last 5 saves with leads of 2-3 runs. Coco does his normal thing and gives up 2 runs to tie the game including a double to a guy who was hitting 100. So, now he has a 12.00 ERA (Yes, that's twelve) which is the worst on the team and probably the worst of any closer in the Majors. Rangers hitters scored a run in bottom of 9th to win. I happened to have the radio turned on and heard an after game call show. This lady calls in and says that Buck is the best manager in the majors because she has never been able to read a curse word from his lips! (she hasn't seen him with his hairstylist!) Then, she says that the answer to Cordero is to pray for him and keep using him as the closer! Baseball with a Bible!!!!! P.S. - Rangers are trravelling to Cleveland to play the Indians this weekend. Maybe they'll get some Old Time Religion! |
